Rockdale Diwali Festival date and road closures: what visitors need to know

Council's event page lists Saturday 7 November, while an older release says Friday 6 November. Road closures begin at 7am on Saturday.

Rockdale’s King Street Mall is preparing for a free Diwali celebration, but residents planning to attend should note a difference between two dates published by Bayside Council.

The council’s dedicated festival event page lists Saturday 7 November 2026, from 5pm to 10pm. An earlier council news release lists Friday 6 November. The current event page gives the more detailed visitor information, including Saturday road-closure times. Bayside News has not independently confirmed why the dates differ, so visitors should check the event page again before travelling.

What’s planned for the evening?

According to the council’s event information, the festival will bring music, dance, lights and food to the Rockdale town centre. The programme includes Bollywood and other cultural performances, dhol drummers, henna art, rangoli displays, craft activities for children and roaming entertainers.

Entry and stage entertainment are free. Food and drinks will be available to buy from vendors, so families can attend without purchasing a ticket, but should budget for anything they want to eat or drink.

Road closures start in the morning

People driving through central Rockdale will need to plan ahead. Council says King Street, Market Street and King Lane will close at 7am on Saturday 7 November and reopen at 1am on Sunday 8 November. These closures begin ten hours before the festival’s listed start time and may affect local access, deliveries and journeys through the shopping area.

There are car parks near Market Street and York Street, but spaces may be limited. Drivers should follow temporary directions and check local parking signs. Residents and businesses near the event site can expect advance notification letters, according to council.

Getting there and planning your visit

Rockdale railway station is around 300 metres from King Street Mall, roughly a five-minute walk. Council also lists buses 422, 453, 473, 476, 477, 478, 479, 492 and 493 as serving the station area. Check your journey before leaving, particularly if road closures affect your usual route.

Seating at the event will be limited, although accessible paths and toilets are planned. Small and medium-sized dogs are permitted on leads. Smoking and vaping are not allowed inside the event area.

Bad weather could change the programme. Council says it will post updates 12 to 24 hours before the event if severe weather threatens. Anyone travelling with children or needing accessible facilities should check the latest official details first.
