Free Project Planet day coming to Wolli Creek

Cahill Park will host a full day of environmental workshops, family activities, talks and stalls on Saturday 17 October.

Wolli Creek residents can spend Saturday 17 October learning practical ways to reduce waste, repair household items and live more sustainably when Bayside Council’s free Project Planet event returns to Cahill Park.

The family-friendly fair runs from 10am to 4pm beside the Cooks River, combining hands-on workshops with talks, children’s activities, live music, food trucks and an outdoor screening. General admission and the entertainment program are free, although some activities require registration.

What can you do at Project Planet?

Visitors can explore sessions on composting, repairing belongings, gardening and reusing materials rather than throwing them away. Council’s listed activities include beeswax-wrap making, transforming bottle-top lids into everyday objects, nature craft, clothing-care advice and household repair sessions with The Bower.

People interested in gardening and reducing food waste can look for the planting-a-garden activity and a noon session introducing Bokashi composting. The program also includes an 11am discussion about urban wetlands and a 1pm First Nations knowledge session.

For cyclists, Bikewise is scheduled to offer a bike check-and-tune activity. Council also lists workshops involving dirtgirlworld and the Tree Veneration Society, along with panel discussions and cooking demonstrations.

Activities for families

Project Planet is designed for families as well as adults interested in environmental issues. Children can take part in nature crafts and other drop-in activities while visitors explore the event’s Action Hub and Knowledge Hub.

Council says the program will feature special guest Costa the Garden Gnome, known from ABC television, as well as live performances and film screenings.

Do you need to book?

General admission is free. Council lists a number of workshops with registration links, so visitors hoping to attend a specific session should check the official Project Planet program and register where requested. Workshop places and schedules may change.

Food, accessibility and facilities

Food trucks and vendors will operate at the event, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options listed by Council. Visitors can refill water bottles at Council hydration stations.

Public toilets are available at Cahill Park, and first aid will be provided at the Environment & Resilience stall. Council says the site will have accessible paths, dedicated drop-off zones, accessible toilets, a mobile sensory unit and signage, with provision for Auslan users.

For accessibility questions, residents can email events@bayside.nsw.gov.au.

Why this matters locally

The event gives Bayside households an opportunity to try practical skills, from repairing items to composting, that can be used at home after the fair. Its location at Cahill Park also connects the program with local interest in the Cooks River environment.
