More than 1,300 artworks from students at 17 Bayside primary schools were entered in Bayside Council’s 2026 Book Week Art Competition.
The annual competition followed the Children’s Book Week theme Book an Adventure, encouraging students to turn ideas from stories, reading and imagination into visual art.
Students across Bayside took part
Entries were divided into two age categories: Kindergarten to Year 2 and Years 3 to 6. Council says 60 winners and place-getters were recognised from the more than 1,300 entries received.
The winners were celebrated at an awards ceremony on 31 August, following Children’s Book Week activities across local schools and libraries.
More than an art competition
The project connects reading with creativity by asking children to interpret a literary theme visually. That gives students another way to respond to books and storytelling beyond a traditional written exercise.
With 17 primary schools participating, the competition also provides a snapshot of creative work being produced by young people across different parts of Bayside.
Recognising young local talent
Council described the entries as demonstrating creativity, artistic talent and storytelling skills. The large number of submissions meant only a small proportion received awards, but participation extended well beyond the 60 recognised entries.
The competition is part of Bayside’s annual Book Week program and gives local students an opportunity to have their work recognised outside their individual schools.
