Bayside Council will investigate a new walking and cycling corridor linking Bexley North, Carlton, Banksia and Rockdale railway stations.
The proposal is still at the planning stage. Council intends to assess a route identified in the Bayside Bike Plan 2024, or a comparable connection between the four stations, before deciding on a preferred option.
Where could the route go?
The corridor is intended to connect everyday destinations including schools, Bexley Library, Bexley Aquatic Centre, Seaforth Park, Bardwell Valley, local shopping areas and sporting facilities.
Council will also investigate a possible spur between Rockdale Station and Bardwell Valley Golf Club through Lydham Hall and the Bardwell Valley Parklands.
Why Council is investigating the connection
The project forms part of Bayside’s wider active-transport planning, which aims to make walking and cycling safer and create better links between railway stations, parks, schools and town centres.
A connected corridor could give residents an alternative for shorter local trips while improving access to public transport. The exact route, treatments and impacts cannot be determined until the feasibility work is completed.
What happens next?
Council says a feasibility project is expected to be included in the Draft Operational Plan 2027/28. The work will assess Priority Route EW6 from the Bayside Bike Plan 2024 or a similar route connecting the four stations.
The Walking and Cycling Forum and other relevant stakeholders are expected to be consulted before a later report goes back to Council.
That report is expected to identify a preferred route, estimated costs, possible funding sources and a proposed delivery timetable. No construction date has been announced.
