Future of Kings Wetland back in focus

The bushland beside the M6 Active Transport Corridor needs restoration and weed control, with most of the land owned by Transport for NSW.

The future of Kings Wetland near Brighton-Le-Sands and Rockdale is back in focus, with calls for restoration and long-term care of the bushland beside the new M6 Active Transport Corridor.

The wetland is one of the remaining pockets of natural habitat in a heavily urbanised part of Bayside. Its condition has become more visible since the active transport corridor opened the area to more people walking and cycling nearby.

Most of Kings Wetland is on land owned by Transport for NSW. Bayside Council owns one parcel within the broader area and says the state-owned sections need substantial bush regeneration, weed management and ecological restoration.

Council is negotiating an arrangement that would see it maintain the Active Transport Corridor, but says this would not resolve the restoration work needed in the surrounding wetland and bushland.

Before construction of the corridor, much of the area was heavily overgrown and difficult for the public to access. Increased use of the route has brought greater attention to the wetland and its long-term condition.

Kings Wetland is also recognised as a local heritage item associated with Brighton-Le-Sands and Rockdale.

Council says it will continue discussions with Transport for NSW and seek investment in rehabilitation, weed management and ongoing ecological care. No final restoration program or timetable has yet been announced.
