Arncliffe’s new community hub named Yarawanga

The name means a place of meeting, gathering and learning and will be used for the new library and community facility at Arncliffe Central.

Arncliffe’s new library and community facility will be known as Yarawanga Community Hub and Library after Bayside Council endorsed the name at its 23 September meeting.

Yarawanga means a place of meeting, gathering and learning, reflecting the planned facility’s role as a community destination where people can access services, take part in programs, learn and connect with others.

The name was proposed by Council’s First Nations Advisory Group through a community naming process. Local organisations with strong community connections were invited to suggest names between 19 May and 31 July, including the St George Historical Society, Botany Historical Trust and Council’s First Nations Advisory Group.

The hub is a key part of the Arncliffe Central development and is planned to provide modern library services and flexible community spaces for the growing local area.

Council’s existing project information says design work and approvals for the community hub are underway. The space is expected to be handed over to Council in early 2028, with fit-out and commissioning to follow before the facility opens.

The project is located at the Arncliffe Central site on Princes Highway. Council says the facility is intended to support learning, connection and wellbeing for current and future generations.

The newly endorsed name gives the project a permanent community identity well ahead of opening. Further construction, fit-out and opening information is expected as the wider Arncliffe Central project progresses.
