Safer slow-street zone to be investigated in Brighton-Le-Sands

Francis Avenue has been identified for a safety study following resident concerns and discussions with the local school community.

A section of Francis Avenue in Brighton-Le-Sands will be investigated for possible slow-street safety measures following concerns from residents and the local school community.

Bayside Council agreed at its 23 September meeting to examine the area between Boeing Place and Henson Street. Council says the section between Bay Street and Henson Street has been identified as a priority after concerns were raised by residents, followed by a site visit and discussions with the local school community.

The decision starts an investigation rather than approving a particular road design. Council has not announced a new speed limit, road closure or permanent traffic treatment for Francis Avenue.

Any measures developed through the study would need to be considered in more detail, put through community consultation and reviewed by the Bayside Local Transport Forum before changes could proceed.

That means residents, parents and other road users should have an opportunity to see and comment on any specific proposal that emerges from the investigation.

The study is intended to identify practical ways to improve safety in an area used by residents, families and school traffic. Slow-street treatments can take different forms depending on the location, so the exact measures for Francis Avenue will depend on the study and subsequent consultation.

For now, the important change for locals is that the safety concerns have formally moved into an investigation process. Bayside News will follow the project as specific options or consultation details are released.
