Bayside raises concerns over Eastlakes Shopping Centre redevelopment

Council says the State Significant Development proposal needs further work on scale, infrastructure, flooding and neighbourhood impacts.

Bayside Council has raised a series of concerns about the proposed redevelopment of Eastlakes Shopping Centre at 19A Evans Avenue as the project moves through the NSW Government’s State Significant Development assessment process.

Council resolved on 23 September to provide a detailed submission to the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. While supporting renewal of the shopping centre and additional housing in appropriate locations, Council says the current proposal raises issues around its scale and intensity, impacts on nearby homes, pressure on local infrastructure, public-domain outcomes and consistency with the area’s strategic planning framework.

The Council review involved planning, urban design, engineering, traffic, flooding, landscape and environmental specialists. Because the proposal is classed as State Significant Development, the final assessment and decision rests with the NSW Government rather than Bayside Council.

For Eastlakes residents, the Council submission is an important step in the assessment process rather than a final decision on the development. Further project information and Council’s detailed position are available through the official planning and Council channels.
