Free Eastgardens memoir workshop helps locals preserve life stories

Dementia Action Week session offers practical writing guidance for carers, families and anyone wanting to record personal memories.

Bayside residents can learn practical ways to turn memories and life experiences into written stories at a free memoir workshop at Eastgardens Library on Thursday 24 September.

The 90-minute session is part of Dementia Action Week and is aimed at people interested in preserving their own memories as well as carers and families who want to document another person’s life story.

What the workshop covers

Rafia El-Issa from Timeless Heartlines will lead guided writing exercises and introduce techniques for turning memories into a structured, chapter-based memoir.

Bayside Council says participants will explore how writing can support personal reflection, capture meaningful memories and strengthen connections. The session is intended to give people practical starting points rather than requiring previous writing experience.

A focus on preserving life stories

The Dementia Action Week connection gives the workshop an additional purpose. Personal stories can be easily lost when they are never recorded, and carers or family members may hold important details about a person’s experiences, relationships and memories.

The workshop will look at ways to capture those experiences in writing and give participants techniques they can continue using after the session.

When and where

The workshop runs from 6pm to 7.30pm on Thursday 24 September at Eastgardens Library, 152 Bunnerong Road, Eastgardens.

Attendance is free, but bookings are essential. Residents interested in taking part should register through Bayside Council’s event page before attending.
