Families and friends have created a living Father’s Day tribute at Depena Reserve in Dolls Point, planting native trees that will also add shade and habitat as they mature.
Bayside Council’s annual Trees for Dad event was held on Saturday 5 September and was fully booked across three planting sessions.
A tribute that grows with the community
Participants planted native trees in recognition of dads and father figures, with Council staff providing the trees, equipment and assistance.
The idea combines a personal tribute with a longer-term contribution to the reserve. Rather than being removed after the event, the plantings become part of the local landscape and can continue growing for years.
Council says the trees are expected to contribute to a greener and cooler reserve while providing habitat for local wildlife.
Part of wider greening work
Trees for Dad forms part of Council’s broader work around local green spaces, biodiversity and urban tree cover. Increasing vegetation can provide shade and habitat while making parks more comfortable for people using them.
The Dolls Point event followed a simple format, with three one-hour sessions and Council staff helping participants plant correctly. Places had been limited and registration was required before the event.
What happens now
The event itself has finished, but the trees remain at Depena Reserve as both community plantings and personal memorials to the fathers and father figures recognised on the day.
Residents interested in future community planting activities can watch Bayside Council’s events and news pages for new opportunities.
